Market Has Changed for New MBA Grads

Shots of Georgetown @ the :40 mark.

myfoxdc
reports:
"WASHINGTON, D.C. - This spring, thousands of business school graduates will be returning to a much different workforce than the one they left to go and get their MBAs.

A new study shows companies are planning to hire 22 percent fewer graduates in 2009 than they did in 2008. They're also cutting internship hires by 21 percent.

On the Georgetown University campus, McDonough School of Business MBA candidates are studying hard, about to re-enter the working world.

"You know at this point in time I have not secured an offer which I've accepted," says Jon McAvoy, who left a job at Freddie Mac to get his MBA at Georgetown.

He's 31 years old and spent eight years in the workforce.

"I was hoping to continue my career in mortgage-backed or asset-backed securities," McAvoy says. "The market dried up. For that reason I shifted gears."

Campus Offers Resources During Hard Economic Times

Blue & Gray reports:
"Pick up a newspaper; switch on the television. News of the world’s faltering economy often may seem inescapable. But with the tumult potentially adding layers of stress to daily life, Georgetown offices are attempting to give faculty and staff members multiple places to find help on campus.

Whether employees face financial, emotional or spiritual trials, there are counselors available and other resources to address difficulties on a confidential basis. The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP), the human resources department, campus ministry and GUWellness are the main offices and programs equipped to assist faculty and staff. The key is finding the right help for individual problems."

No Explosion Scheduled for Georgetown

The Washington Post reports:
"For the filming of a TV pilot, there will be a simulated explosion on Wednesday . . . between 9:30 a.m. and noon near the Key Bridge," read a somewhat exaggerated advisory from the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments. The bulletin, which was quickly posted on news Web sites and which the council later attributed to interagency miscommunication, said, "The explosion will produce a 20 to 30' fireball that will last for approximately two minutes."

Cool!

But no -- not in this hyper-secure, hyper-vigilant capital city. A prolonged explosion? A towering fireball? Imagine the potential for panic.

"The press release that went out makes it sound like something much scarier than it actually is," said Josh Friedman, spokesman for the D.C. Film Office, which is helping CBS Paramount with a show called "Washington Field," which the Hollywood Reporter says is an action series about an FBI unit "comprising elite experts in different areas who travel around the world, responding to events that concern the U.S. national interest."To hear Friedman tell it, they won't be needed near the Key Bridge tomorrow, because there most definitely will not be an "explosion" on the Potomac River.

"That word is misleading," he said, hoping to calm any worry. "It will be a self-contained pyrotechnic special effect. . . . It's actually out on the water. Nothing is being blown up. There's no impact or force of any kind. I think there was some indication that a boat was going to be blown up, and that's not the case."

Academic Access+ Systems Switching to New MyAccess

Blue & Gray reports:
"In the coming months, University Information Services (UIS) will transition StudentAccess+ and FacultyAccess+ into one new system that will handle student and academic data – MyAccess.

The changes primarily will affect Main Campus and Law Center faculty and students since the Medical Center does not rely heavily on Access+ systems and likewise will not rely heavily on the new MyAccess system for academic management.

“The new system Georgetown selected, Banner, is one of the most widely used student systems in higher education,” said David Lambert, vice president and university chief information officer. “For example, Yale, Brown and George Washington universities run their student operations with Banner.”

Smartbike program expected to grow by summer

WTOP reports:
"By summer, the D.C. Department of Transportation will have expanded the current Smartbike system from 10 racks to 50 racks.

"We are already seeing that the vast amount of usage is commuting," DDOT Director Gabe Klein tells WTOP. "This will be a pretty drastic expansion of the program, and this is what we set out to do when we launched it."

The expansion will bring the total number of bikes on the city's streets to around 500.

The goal is to get Smartbike running in all eight Wards of the District. The upcoming expansion will not touch all eight Wards, but there will be numerous neighborhoods that get the bikes, including Adams Morgan, Columbia Heights, Capitol Hill, Anacostia and Georgetown."

Georgetown Launches New Channel on iTunes

Blue & Gray reports:
"Looking to catch the secretary of state’s next visit to campus? Or hear the latest thoughts of a Nobel Prize winner? Viewers near and far now have another means to catch a glimpse of what’s happening on the Hilltop – without even setting foot in the nation’s capital.

The university recently launched a brand new channel on the popular digital-media player, iTunes U, giving listeners and viewers a wide array of digital content that includes video of notable events and lectures and a virtual library of faculty expert commentary on events affecting the nation and the world.

Georgetown on iTunes U is the latest step in the university’s effort to extend the university’s online presence, Green Bataille said. Many Georgetown events already are available on FORA.tv, which broadcasts lectures, discussions and debates from around the world. The university’s online presence also extends to social networking sites that include Facebook and LinkedIn."

Georgetown opens NIT play against Baylor

The Washington Times reports:

"A season sabotaged by intangibles has all the earmarks of a poor ending.

Among all the postseason brackets, it's hard to find a matchup featuring two teams trending in such opposite directions as Georgetown and Baylor, who meet Wednesday night at Baylor's Ferrell Center in Waco, Texas, in the opening round of the NIT.

Baylor (20-14) is coming off a surprising surge that saw the Bears oust Kansas and Texas on consecutive days on the way to an unlikely appearance in the Big 12 tournament final.

"Yeah, they are playing their best basketball right now, and we certainly haven't been," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. "They've got a bunch of seniors out there who obviously don't want to stop playing."

The Washington Post reports:
"Robert Gallucci will be the new president of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Chicago-based organization announced today, in tapping the veteran Washington envoy and educator to head one of the nation's most prestigious philanthropies.

Gallucci, 63, has been Georgetown University's dean of the School of Foreign Service for 13 years, after a career as a diplomat and negotiator working with North Korea, Russia, Iraq and the former Yugoslavia. He will leave the university June 30 and begin his five-year term at the MacArthur Foundation the next day.

SaxaSpeak is recruiting!

SaxaSpeak is powered by a handful of graduating seniors so it needs fresh blood. We hope a number of you would like to serve your fellow students and sign on as SaxaSpeak content distributors, meaning you'd be responsible for publishing content collected from various sources.

It's a very small time commitment, please consider it and let us know at saxaspeak [at] gmail.com. You'll need a gmail address to be added as a content distributor. Also, in your email, please include your school (MSB, COL, SFS, NHS) and year ('11, '12 etc).

SaxaSpeak has come a long way in its short history. We now get over 6,000 unique visitors a month and were recently named among the top ten "Best Alternative Media Outlets" on college campuses nationwide by U.S. News and World Report. We're not sure we qualify for that latter accolade, but we'll take it.

Our detractors have criticized us for not producing our own content, to which we say: that's not the point! SaxaSpeak attempts to solve what we see as a problem of poor information aggregation at Georgetown. There's lots of important information floating around campus and we try to collect it in one, easy-to-access, digital space. Toward that end we've built a robust presence on Facebook, added campus media publications like The Hoya as content distributors and linked to important information resources for students.

This is progress, but we're not satisfied. Among other things, we'd like to add Google calendar functionality to SaxaSpeak to facilitate a more comprehensive, useful, event listing format. Also, how great would it be if on Thursday SaxaSpeak published a "Weekend Roundup" that featured weekend events (concerts, lectures, screenings etc) in a condensed list? We're not there yet, but we think with your help we could get there very soon.

Best,
SaxaSpeak

Speech codes. Censorship. Enforced political conformity. Hostility to diversity of opinion. Sensitivity training. We usually associate such things with the worst excesses of fascism and communism, not with the American universities that nurtured the free speech movement. But American higher education bears a disturbing resemblance to the totalitarian societies that are anathema to our nation's ideal of liberty. Evan Coyne Maloney's documentary film, Indoctrinate U, reveals the breathtaking institutional intolerance you won't read about in the glossy marketing brochures of Harvard, Berkeley, Michigan, Yale, and hundreds of other American colleges and universities.

Georgetown Heads to the NIT

The Washington Post reports:
"Georgetown, Virginia Tech and George Mason were each selected to the annual 32-team tournament designated for the top teams left out of the NCAA tournament.

On Wednesday, sixth-seeded Georgetown visits third-seeded Baylor, and second-seeded Virginia Tech will host Duquesne at Cassell Coliseum. The winners of those two games meet in the second round, which will be played from Thursday through March 23.

In the season's first few weeks, when everything was going Georgetown's way, the Hoyas (16-14) trounced Maryland by 27 points and six days later crushed American by 24, leaving no doubt about which team ruled college basketball in the Washington area.

The meltdown that followed was well documented. After bolting to a 10-1 start and climbing as high as No. 9 in the rankings, Georgetown dropped 10 of its last 14 regular season games, played its way out of consideration for an at-large berth in the NCAA tournament and lost in the opening round of Big East tournament for only the second time in school history"

HIV/AIDS Rate in D.C. Hits 3%; Considered a 'Severe' Epidemic

The Washington Post reports:
"At least 3 percent of District residents have HIV or AIDS, a total that far surpasses the 1 percent threshold that constitutes a "generalized and severe" epidemic, according to a report scheduled to be released by health officials tomorrow.

"Our rates are higher than West Africa," said Shannon L. Hader, director of the District's HIV/AIDS Administration, who once led the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's work in Zimbabwe. "They're on par with Uganda and some parts of Kenya."

The District's report found a 22 percent increase in HIV and AIDS cases from the 12,428 reported at the end of 2006, touching every race and sex across population and neighborhoods, with an epidemic level in all but one of the eight wards."

GU Researchers: Two drinks a day increase cancer risk by a fifth

Tbe Telegraph reports:
"Consuming 30 or more grams of alcohol a day raises the likelihood of developing the disease by 22 per cent, scientists found.

That is the equivalent of roughly two drinks or three units of alcohol, according to the researchers.

The investigation was one of the largest ever to examine dietary factors influencing pancreatic cancer.

Scientists analysed data from 14 studies looking at the food and drink consumption of more than 860,000 men and women.

Of these, 2,187 were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

Dr Jeanine Genkinger, from Georgetown University in Washington DC, said: "Our findings support multiple nutrition recommendations that men should limit intake to no more than two alcoholic beverages per day and women should limit intake to no more than one."

They defined "a drink" as 12 fluid ounces of beer(just over half a pint), four fluid ounces of wine (a small glass), or 1.5 fluid ounces of spirits (half way between a single and a double).

Previous studies had been unable to confirm an association between alcohol consumption and pancreatic cancer risk."

Slack Economy Means Boom for GU Law

The LegalTimes blog reports:
"The number of students applying to Washington-area law schools has surged as the economy sunk. George Washington University Law School’s applicant numbers are up 8 percent from last academic year, and the University of Virginia School of Law’s applicants have risen more than 10 percent. Georgetown University Law Center, meanwhile, received 12 percent more applications than last year.

Andrew Cornblatt, Georgetown’s dean of admissions, says the law school extended its deadline to accommodate last-minute applicants coping with lay-offs and other bad economic news. The school pushed the cutoff back a month to March 2. Cornblatt says his office received roughly 1,000 applications on Feb. 2 and Feb. 3 combined, a sign that people were rushing to get in before the original deadline.

“I didn’t want to shut anybody out,” he says. “In this climate, everything’s in flux, and we want to try to be accommodating.” Georgetown has extended its deadline “often” in the past, he says. “Washington D.C. has become an even more attractive place for young people to come,” he says.

Cornblatt’s office received close to 11,700 applications this academic year, up from around 10,500 last year. But in the end, Georgetown hasn’t changed its admissions target. By accepting 2,300 students, Cornblatt plans to hit his goal of enrolling 575 students.

“Business, as they say, is very good,” he says."

The Neverending Battle of Apple Vs. Georgetown Continues

Media Bistro reports:
"Following up on a continuing story, after four rejections over the past two years, Apple is apparently hoping the fifth time is the charm, as they've already turned in the latest proposal for their retail store in the Georgetown area of Washington D.C., after their aforementioned fourth rejection by one of the neighborhood standards boards back in mid-January. It has been approved already by one of the committees in charge of keeping the popular shopping area maintaining a colonial feel, but Apple's longtime nemesis, the Old Georgetown Board, gets to see the plans next and judging from the description of this new design, it doesn't really sound like enough to appease them, so we're predicting you're going to continue to read these "Apple gets shut down again" posts for the next few years until either Apple gives up and goes home or the store winds up looking like Monticello."

Final stretch gives Hoyas some hope

The Washington Times reports:
"Mission plausible.

Its postseason hopes suddenly resurrected via Saturday's upset victory at No. 11 Villanova, Georgetown heads down the stretch in decent position to sneak into college basketball's big bracket.

"It's human nature [to have a shift in attitude after you win]," Georgetown coach John Thompson III said Monday. "You feel better about yourself. You feel better after winning than losing, but how we go about preparing for St. John's is the same as we have all year."

The Hoyas (15-12, 6-10 Big East) wouldn't seem a likely at-large candidate at first blush, but their win total, league record and recent trend are likely to look a bit better after this final week of the regular season. The Hoyas close their Big East slate at St. John's on Tuesday and vs. DePaul on Saturday. While coaches have spent the entire season explaining that no team in the conference can be overlooked, not all slumbering dragons are created equal."
